Richard Sharples

Artists Richard Sharples specializes in sculpture, installations and public art. During 2009 he worked on a project for Manchester Children’s Hospital called Curious creatures. I particularly liked a section of the project called Escape.

Richard created butterfly cases full of butterfly’s but some of the occupants had escaped. This piece was placed on some double doors in the hospital and is used as a way finder at a corridor junction. I think this is a really creative and interesting alternative to a sign.

It’s as though the butterflies are taking over the space it’s quite surreal and your eyes are drawn to different points of the wall. I like to idea of bringing wildlife and nature inside a clinical environment it makes it a lot more warm and friendly and nature is also very relaxing.
